Facing demons

The woman’s white visage clashed with the black hair fanning her face, and was shrouded by a surreal influx of red, magenta, and burgundy—the ambiance appeared to consume her. Her face was projected away from view, as if she were hiding herself from the public eye.

The portrait haunted him, and made him feel shame, yet he kept it on his bedside table to remind him. It was the first painting he had ever published, on the cover of her book and a testimony to the purgatory she had penned in the pages of her novel, which he had inadvertently caused her to experience again.

He knew not the melancholy story that bled through every typed alphabet and each deliberate chapter. But he knew, from knowing her, that she had been hurt before, and if he had had the courage to read the book, he would have found out why. He admired her bravery, but also envied it because he could not amass enough guts on his own. She faced her demons and wrote about her experiences as a sort of penance, a release from the ghosts of her past. And, she had been brave enough to strip her heart naked at the risk of him breaking it.

Where it all began, how it began…he could only trace it back to the day she walked into his shop. She had not tried to win him over with clichéd paraphrases like every other customer who wanted to get the best deal, but instead she had him strung even before she breathed a word.

Her semi-charming aura, emphasized by the defensive glint in her eyes, yielded her upset beauty, which aroused a myriad of desires in him. The desire to stare at her even from a distance, the desire to hear the sound of her voice, the desire to know her…the desire to have her.

But with desire, comes loyalty, especially if he wanted to keep a woman like her. She was independent, had her own ideals, made a commitment to honor and expected the same respect in return. But her weakness was that she had a binding heart. For a man who had groveled in his bat cave for far too long, it should have given him the strength to open up, but he still kept the skeletons under his bed.

December once more

She sits alone in the staff lounge and gazes at the big clock on the wall. It's midnight. She stands up and goes across the room to tear off the November page of the calendar. It is now December. And all at once she is transported back in time to a December many years ago. It’s always this way. Every year. As soon as the winter chill starts residing in the air and November closely comes to an end, she gets absorbed in thoughts of that sweet December. Wishing she could bring it all back or find a way to change the course of time…and life. But that’s just a hopeful dream.

Memories have the power to pull at one’s heartstrings, sometimes it pulls you towards joy; sometimes it pulls you towards pain, as for her, she experiences both.

There are twelve months in a year. But December is all she cares to know…all she cares to remember…

Stop. Breathe.

Time stands still.
Infusion of air.
Coalescent vigor at the slightest touch.
Pictorial thoughts. Living dreams.
It started with a moment.
Grew into a consequential chain of moments.
Until it became an existence.
Bewitching stares. Captivating sighs.
A grip so tight, no escape, need no escape.

Don't look back

I was dying for you to ask me to stay,
I wanted to run back the moment I looked away,
But I cannot plant my roots,
In soil where it does not belong,
My vines cannot crawl upon,
A stonewall with no fissures to sustain my growth…

Fate bites again

When fate bites,
It drains every ounce of life,
Making you wish you could just close your eyes,
And walk through revolving doors,
To take you back,
Only to open a door you never sought before,
And fate bites...again,
But this time the blood is sweeter...

The world is a strange place,
Or rather the Creator weaves circumstances,
In a way that all good things end,
But with an end follows a beginning,
Slightly not what you expect,
But everything you desire in time...

Sometimes you feel so weak,
That it even hurts to breathe,
Then you rise when it hits you,
A power stronger than dreams,
A love bolder than destiny...

Suddenly, out of a coma,
You realize what you have missed,
The simple pleasures in life,
You discover just the right ingredient,
To add a touch of sweetness to complications...

You find someone,
No more than human,
But a gift from above,
That challenges you,
But lets you stand to challenge the world,
You feel alive,
And forget there was ever anything before,
And pray you never have to live another day without...
